Jackson Street and the Bay After Morning Rains, San Francisco, 1851

This view shows Jackson Street, San Francisco, early in 1851, the second full year of the California Gold Rush. Though no photographs survive to show us directly what this area looked like at the time, there are numerous maps, advertisements, and first hand accounts which I’ve used to faithfully reconstruct this portrait of the young city’s waterfront and the people that inhabited it.
