The Steamship Antelope Departing Yerba Buena Cove, San Francisco, 1851

This view shows Yerba Buena Cove in San Francisco in 1851. During the first few years of the California Gold Rush, this shallow cove began to be quickly filled in with debris from frequent fires and soil excavated from hills nearby. The Antelope, a side wheel steamship, was at this time in regular service ferrying freight and passengers between San Francisco and Sacramento.
